A ground-based radio transmitter that emits signals in all directions. Aircraft equipped with an Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) can home in on the NDB signal, allowing pilots to determine their bearing relative to the station.

Unlike VOR or TACAN, an NDB does not provide radials or range; it only gives a direction to/from the station. Pilots must combine bearing information with time, groundspeed, or other fixes to determine position.

NDBs were once widespread for enroute navigation and non-precision approaches, but their use has declined in favor of VORs and GPS. They are still valuable as a backup and in remote areas.

Application in DCS World

  • Some aircraft (e.g., L-39, C-101, Mi-8, Mi-24, and other Soviet-era or training aircraft) feature ADF receivers that can use mission-placed NDB stations.

  • NDBs are not widely implemented on DCS maps by default; they typically need to be added by mission designers as radio beacons. Also, NDB approaches are not published in DCS as they are in civilian charts.

Cadets can practice ADF needle tracking and homing procedures in aircraft that support it, simulating the challenge of flying with minimal navigation data, which sharpens instrument flying discipline.
