A military radio navigation system that provides aircraft with bearing and distance information relative to a ground station or another aircraft. TACAN is the military equivalent of VOR/DME, optimized for secure, tactical operations and widely used by NATO air forces.

- Slant-range distance, typically displayed in nautical miles.

- Ground TACAN: Fixed stations at airbases or navigation points.
- Air-to-air TACAN: Allows one aircraft (e.g., tanker or lead aircraft) to act as a TACAN station for others.
- Military standard:
Designed for robustness and integration with combat avionics, TACAN is the primary navigation aid for military IFR procedures, enroute navigation, and rendezvous. - VORTAC concept:
In the real world, some installations combine VOR (civil) and TACAN (military) into a single station called a VORTAC, serving both communities.
Application in DCS World
TACAN is one of the core navigation systems in DCS World and is widely implemented across maps and aircraft.
- Many DCS aircraft (F/A-18C, F-16C, A-10C, F-14, Mirage 2000C, AV-8B, etc.) rely heavily on TACAN for:
- Enroute navigation
- Initial approach fixes
- Holding patterns
- Air-to-air rendezvous (tankers, lead aircraft)
- Most military airbases in DCS provide TACAN channels, often serving as the primary navigation aid where civilian VORs are absent.
- Air-to-air TACAN is commonly used for:
- Tanker rendezvous
- Formation rejoin
- Poor-visibility or night operations
Limitations and notes:
- DCS does not model all real-world TACAN limitations (signal scalloping, interference, degraded accuracy at extreme ranges).
- Civilian-style VOR networks are largely absent, making TACAN the default substitute for VOR/DME training in DCS.
Cadets should become fully comfortable with TACAN channel selection, mode settings (X/Y), bearing tracking, and distance interpretation, as TACAN proficiency underpins most military navigation and instrument procedures in the simulator.
