Key characteristics:

  • No guidance: Once released, the bomb follows a ballistic trajectory.

  • Accuracy factors: Aircraft speed, altitude, dive angle, wind, and pilot skill all determine impact point.

  • Delivery methods:

    • CCIP (Continuously Computed Impact Point): Pilot sees an aiming pipper where the bomb would land.

    • CCRP (Continuously Computed Release Point): Bomb is released automatically at the computed point for the selected target.

  • Types: General-purpose (e.g., Mk-82, Mk-84), cluster munitions, incendiaries, and others.

  • Advantages: Cheap, versatile, large payloads.

  • Limitations: Much less accurate than PGMs; risk of collateral damage; weather, visibility, and pilot error all reduce effectiveness.

Application in DCS World

  • DCS models unguided bombs for most aircraft, from WWII warbirds to modern jets. Players can employ them using CCIP/CCRP, dive bombing, or level release techniques.

  • Accuracy in DCS is easier than real life, since wind modeling, bombing tables, and pilot error are simplified. Real-world factors like fusing errors or dud rates are not modeled.

Cadets should train with unguided bombs first to build weapons employment fundamentals, learning dive angles, release envelopes, and sight picture. Mastery of “dumb bombs” builds the discipline needed before advancing to PGMs.
