The Center of Gravity (CG) is the point at which an aircraft’s total weight is considered to act. It is the aircraft’s balance point, and its position has a major effect on stability, control, trim, and overall handling.

  • More dangerous stall and spin behavior

An aft CG can make the aircraft feel more agile, but also more unstable and less forgiving.

Cadets should understand that:

  • Aircraft handling changes as loading changes
  • “Same aircraft” does not always mean “same feel”
  • Stability and control are heavily influenced by balance, not just speed or weight

Even when DCS simplifies the math, the concept remains essential:
a pilot must understand why an aircraft may suddenly feel nose-heavy, light in pitch, or harder to recover.
