A pre-designated maneuver area used primarily by rotary-wing aircraft (attack helicopters) during Close Air Support (CAS) missions. It serves as the helicopter equivalent of the IP (Initial Point) for fixed-wing aircraft, providing a safe, controlled location from which to observe, engage, and coordinate attacks.
Key characteristics:
- Location: Positioned to provide good observation of the target area while minimizing exposure to enemy threats.
- Flexibility: Unlike a single IP-to-target run, a BP allows helicopters to maneuver, mask behind terrain, and reposition between engagements.
- Coordination: JTACs/FACs assign BPs to ensure helicopter operations are deconflicted from fixed-wing aircraft and friendly ground units.
- Control: BPs help standardize where helicopters hold and attack from, streamlining CAS communication and reducing battlefield confusion.
Application in DCS World
- Mission creators can define Battle Positions as waypoints or zones for helicopters, and multiplayer FACs can direct rotary-wing pilots into BPs during CAS missions. Helicopters like the AH-64, Ka-50, and Mi-24 benefit from BP tactics.
- AI JTACs in DCS do not assign BPs, and there is no built-in BP designation system. BPs must be created manually in mission planning or coordinated verbally in multiplayer.
Cadets should practice entering, holding, and engaging from BPs, while coordinating with fixed-wing assets to avoid airspace conflicts. Using BPs correctly in multiplayer CAS enhances realism and replicates modern attack helicopter doctrine.
